We guarantee that your child will have an extraordinary time as ASB students are working their best to make this dance great. We have also given students the opportunity to list songs of their choice that they would like to hear during the dance. The San Diego Military Collaborative -

Community Prevention and Safety Alliance coalition will be hosting a forum for parents and youth on February 28th from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Resources and a light dinner will begin at 5:30pm. This forum is designed to improve interpersonal communication between parents and their children. Hear from expert panelists, youth participants, and parents in an inclusive, thought-provoking forum geared for 21st century families. Event is intended for parents who have children in middle school or high school. For questions, please contact Stacy Chiles schiles@saysandiego.org.

Did you know, the California Highway Patrol data for San Diego County shows twice as many fatalities involved drunk and drugged drivers during the holiday season, compared to before and afterward?

Club ELEVATED wanted to bring awareness to this issue so they partnered with MADD to create holiday-themed stickers that would remind consumers that it is illegal to purchase or provide alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 and to NOT drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. ELEVATED youth members teamed up with Primos market to distribute these stickers during the holiday season. If you'd like more information about how a youth can join ELEVATED, please contact Stacy Chiles at schiles@saysandiego.org

CHEER CLINIC!!!

ROTC:

Serra placed 3rd at this year’s SDUSD JROTC Brigade Academic Bowl Championship. 13 high school JROTC programs went head to head competing in a College Bowl format at Patrick Henry High School on Saturday, January 12th. Patrick Henry and Scripps Ranch finished 1st and 2nd respectively. The Conquistadors, led by Blake Eastman, and with teammates Niko Edwards, Andrew Leyton, and Lauren Keef, advanced to the finals for the first time earning a 3rd place trophy, medals and ribbons for their uniforms. Congratulations Conquistador Cadets!

Also we have NEW Serra gear! Get it right here! https://squareup.com/store/serrafoundation/

It supports the Serra Foundation, which in turn supports us.  It’s a win-win.  (Sidenote:  The women’s gear runs very small.)

Instruction Spotlight!:

The Master Schedule for the following school year is starting! We are pleased to be offering (numbers depend) the following new courses!

French is back!

Green Up: A hands on lab approach to Physics for Physics credit (Sophomores)

Musical Theater (as long as you are in a theater or Music class you can take it!)

The third course in the pathways your children are in

AND zero period PE!!!!!!!---THIS IS HUGE!*

*Student in 9th grade now and incoming will have a zero period PE option. This will allow them to be in a additional elective. Students can now be in ASB and a pathway if they choose zero period PE also AVID and AP Human Geography.

********BIG NEWS:******** SHS is proud to add a VAPA pathway to the 4 we already had. We will have a Music strand and a Theater stand and students interested in the art will get to try both strands. This way students don't have to choose between music and anything else. They will also be able to take ASB etc!

The main issues we saw and heard from the community were the following:

1. More of a commitment to the arts! The pathway is the beginning of the commitment I have to strengthen this area of SHS!

2. Another language---we polled Middle Schools and the winner was French

3. More flexibility in the schedule to take more things....You want more flexibility SIGN UP FOR ZERO PERIOD PE!!!! (incoming 9th and 10th graders!!!)

Athletics: WINTER SPORTS ARE HERE! CHECK MAX PREPS!A great way to spend your evenings is with SHS Athletics and our amazing events. There are so many that we have our own website devoted to just this topic. Please reference this link which can also be found on our webpage.http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/serra-conquistadors-(san-diego,ca)/calendar.htm Reminder: Athletics is a privilege not a right. An athletes' first step if they are acting in a manner unbecoming of Serra is that Athletics is taken away for the season! A sports physical dated after June 4, 2018 must also be turned into the front office with the confirmation form from the website. To get cleared for athletics go to www.athleticclearance.com
