Patience is a Virtue--We Thank You!

DONT FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE TO MY BLOG---SCROLL ALL THEWAY DOWN!

Dear Parents---

In opening this school year, we have undergone some significant issues that we are still working to overcome. You (the community) have been very patient and supportive and we want to say thank you. We are attempting to wrap things up by end of today today. One is the phone issue--many of the phones on campus are not ringing nor are they properly connected to the appropriate extension. Phones are, not controlled by Serra; we have reached out for help and are hoping to resolve this promptly. The other issue we ran into was a glitch in scheduling. We have been working until 1 am for over a week now in order to get as many scheduling issues rectified as we can by the end of today.

Additionally, for the first three days this week, we provided a link to help address schedule issues so that working parents didn't have to stand in line and wait. We thank you for your patience and appreciate the feedback you have provided on this process to address schedule errors. Next year, I will be building the schedule in a different program that is much more efficient and glitch free.

Lastly MANY other schools event are appearing on our calendar. Please look below for what you need to know!!!!! We are going to purchase the calendar app that is not attached to the district website.

We profusely apologize and every member of our team is working hard to rectify it.

In the know:

THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY!

1. Tonight we have a VARSITY football game at 7pm at Del Norte High School. Please come support the team.

2. The Serra Foundation Meeting is 9/5 at 6:30 pm at Serra High School in the Media Center. Most of the committee's children are aging out so we desperately need members or the Foundation will not be able to be sustained. They do amazing work supporting instruction at Serra High School.

3. Our Open House is on September 12, 2018 from 5:00-7:30pm.

4. Our welcome back dance is fast approaching, and we want everyone there!  Not only will there be great music, but there will also be clubs present selling food, and offering games.  If you bought an ASB card, the dance is FREE!  If you don’t have an ASB card yet, the dance is $10.

All students must turn in a dance agreement and get a ticket by Friday, September 7th to go to the dance.  No students will be allowed into the dance if they have not received a ticket by the 7th.  On the night of the dance, please make sure your student has a photo ID.  We need to see their photo ID in order to check them into the dance.  This can be any photo ID.  You can download from the Serra Web Page or from this blog!

5. PSAT--PLEASE READ: Attention Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior Parents:

ThePSAT will be given on Serra’s campus on October 10, 2018.  If you are interested in having your student take the PSAT, the deadline to register is September 7, 2018.  Students must bring their PSAT payment in the form of cash or check (payable to Serra High School) by this deadline.  Freshman will pay $11 and Juniors, $16. Payment should be given to the Finance Office either at lunch or after school and your student’s name will be added to the PSAT list of test takers.  Note: The district pays for all 10th graders to take this PSAT and there is no fee for 10th grade ONLY nor do they have to sign up as they will take this test in their English classes. More details provided as the test gets closer.

6. Make Up Pictures: October 2, 2018 Students will be able to take make up pictures. So put your best outfit on and get ready to smile.

And now you know!

The Alumni Room: We are dedicated to all graduates and future graduates!!!! My gift to you and the teachers!

Just as much as our students deserve environments worthy of learning so do our Serra families and Serra Staff. I created this room for parent courses, teachers' planning meetings by dept. and alumni meetings etc. I'm still putting the finishing touches on it. The best part is that it has pictures of graduates in it reminding us of the important work we do!

In addition I found these and bought beautiful gold frames for them. Can't wait to hang them up:

What a AMAZING legacy Serra Has!

Nominations:

Besides Foundation members we need the following as well. If you would like to volunteer we would highly appreciate it as we cannot function without these groups and they have to have community members on them:

1. School Site Council (SSC): This group determines how money in Title 1 and LCFF are spent (money for things that support ALL students. In addition, they have other responsibilities as well. We need 2 parents and 2 students.

2. Governance: This group discusses and gives advice to the Principal on instructional issues and policies on campus. We need 2 parents and 1 student (pretty please)!

For any volunteers and or nominations, please contact the principal Dr. Erica Renfree at erenfree@sandi.net.

School Policies: Always in place but officially start on Tuesday, 9/4.

Your students have been in assemblies, received a planner and in addition have had the planner reviewed in their classes, including all the school rules. All policies are going to be enforced starting Tuesday. Please talk to your children about the following policies that are already being broken:

1. Closed Campus: Students are not allowed to leave campus unless it is on a blue slip. If they leave without permission they will be assigned 5 days detention and be placed on the LOP list. Many of you have upperclassmen that think it is okay to come and go as they please. It is a closed campus. Also no Uber Eats are allowed to be called to deliver food. This puts any stranger in the vicinity of your child and that is unsafe. We will turn them away if we see them and that could cost you money and we definitely don't want that but I don't want strange drivers pulling into the school or even near our school for that matter. Also food deliveries are arriving early or late and coming into the office disturbing us and our work.

2. Dress Code: I personally want to be fashionable. We reviewed our dress code as a staff and created one that I feel is VERY lenient. In fact we have received praise for our progressive dress code as it is one of a few in the state that give students a way to express themselves. However, even with this dress code in place, we have students breaking the rules. Next week they will have to wear a PE shirt if they are out of code or PE pants.

Rules that are already being broken on campus:

  • Girls are wearing tube tops. This is unacceptable for a variety of reasons but mainly because this is a school. Those tops are so cute but not for school. Tops must have straps.

  • Girls are wearing mid drift shirts exposing their midsection. This is like the one real rule on the Dress Code. They can wear spaghetti straps, shorts higher than a 2 in inseam and lots of other garments. Please talk with your children about this. In addition, girls are now coming in T-shirts and making a knot tie exposing their mid drifts. This is not okay either.

  • Boys: Boys can wear bandanas; however, they can not wear one to represent a group.

  • Boys: Boys can not wear any article of clothing that depicts drugs and or alcohol or anything that degrades a group of people.

3. Cell Phones and Earbuds: They are not allowed in class at all. They are allowed before school after school and lunch and even passing period. Please do not text your child during the periods they are in class. Even if you aren't and their friend is, they ALWAYS say it's you. We will take the phone. You don't want to be inconvenienced and neither do we. Phones and earbuds should be away when instruction is taking place. As a parent I would check my child's text messages at night to see if they are texting during class time and if they have no texts and or very few I would ask why? They might be erasing them......(that's just a little insight into what we are dealing with here every day when we should not have to). We could use your support in this. IF there was ever an emergency situation (because we hear that a lot) the following is true: 1. We have a police officer on campus (yes a real one). 2. An "Amber alert" type system would be launched from me to you giving you directions in order to find your child. (Examples: You may need to pick up at another site in TS. Your child will trying to call you would create chaos and stall you getting to your child. We have a very clear training and execution plan should the "worst case scenario" happen.) So they really don't need their phones out except for the SIX times they are allowed.

Thank you for your support!
