Hello Conquistador Nation!

This week was a slow week. All things quiet on the school front. We have some new fencing up. Some of this is temporary and some is not. Construction is a very fluid process. We appreciate your feedback on it and other things construction related. You can always come to my Principal's coffee where I talk very specifically about this issue and more. The next Principal's coffee is on January 25th, at 7:30 AM in the Media Center at Serra. Also we lost to Henry in basketball but our boys put up an insane fight. We are looking forward to playing them again in a few weeks at Serra! Also the Serra 2020 boosters is up and running!Class of 2020: Leslie Larranaga-Britt has a few people together! NEW EMAIL: Serra2020boosters@gmail.com If interested send an email.

THURSDAY-SAT: Flowers for Algernon--Our drama students present!!!!! A MUST SEE!

Flowers for Algernon is a classic story that most read in either high school or middle school! Algernon is a laboratory mouse who has undergone surgery to increase his intelligence by artificial means. The story is told by a series of progress reports written by Charlie Gordon, the first human test subject for the surgery, and it touches upon many different ethical and moral themes such as the treatment of the mentally disabled. Counseling:

Articulation Breakfast is this Thursday and is the beginning of creating the master schedule for the following school year. In addition, very significant changes are coming for AP testing. Stay tuned!

FEB 12th: FAFSA DAY: NEW!!!!!! In media center . All Government classes will go in the Media Center and get help completing FAFSA. Be on the lookout the week before for a checklist of what your child needs to bring.

AND NOW YOU KNOW! Instruction Spotlight!:

Remember the first Blog ???? We started this year making rocks with our "one word". The one thing we were as educators going to practice and commit to. We decided based on that to award a "rock-star" of the month. January was easy as English teacher Tami Thoro was nominated by the students at Serra as their most trusted adult on campus!!!! Great job Tami!

5 in 5 Focus Area - Assessing Students for Learning

This past month we met as a whole staff and created Action Plans for students. This comes from an elementary model where if students were struggling ( C or lower) they received a learning contract which had goals for all parties to support the student. Each teacher went through this process at Serra for students who showed they were struggling. This month we are focused on the question: Are my assessments even good ones to be giving? Teachers will be bringing in their final exams for peer critique and review to measure for standards, validity, reliability, and Depth of Knowledge (DOK). Lastly, Are the students we have action plans for able to access the final or are we setting them up for failure????? We then will be coming back together at the end of the month and looking at the data from these assessments and our focus students.

Construction: Look at what we are up to!
